This online-training course is intended to provide deeper knowledge of energy’s relationship to sustainable development and how delivery of clean, affordable energy services, wise management of energy resources, and the leveraging of technological and institutional energy related opportunities can serve as instruments to reach that goal. Participants will learn of sustainable energy options, available modes of implementation, local resources required, and the policy and institutional conditions required to operationalise such options.

The course is offered by IIIEE, Lund University, UNEP and UNDP. It is free of charge for those accepted to the course. Last date for application: April 6th, 2009.

Climate Wars by Gwynne Dyer

An interesting story about how changing climate patterns affects food production. And that is what causes the climate related wars. I listened to Gwynne Dyer at a seminar in Stockholm organised by the Tällberg Foundation. The showcase for climate change was the Arctic ice melting. Gwynne Dyer also pointed out that we are building todays climate change discussions on data that are from 2002-2003, that is before the Arctic ice melting was lifted as a big concern. The reason for this delay is the time it takes for research to go through the peer review process of being published and end up in the IPCC report. For example the IPCC report from 2007 is built on information from 2006.

Much can be done to reduce fuel consumption by driving differently. Some call it green driving or eco-driving or even eco friendly driving, but the idea is the same: to save gas, costs and climate change impacts.

If you can stand the corporate introduction, this free online e-course from Ford Motor Company on eco-driving has its merits, once you dig into it. You might improve fuel economy with an average of 24%, they say. But you might be better off just reading the ten key tips on the opening page. Here is the summary:

Slow down and watch speed
Accelerate and brake smoothly
No idling
Check your tires
Be kind to your vehicle
Travel light
Minimize use of heater and air conditioning
Close windows at high speed
Choose the right oil
Plan the trip ahead

At the end of the e-course there is also a look at alternative ways of transport, like walking and biking and public transport, which is good. What struck me, however, is the considerable size of the cars that were presented ´waxed and shined´ in an online course for eco-driving. This signals ´green wash´to me.
